A double day of highway robberies.
On this day in 1924 the Australian horse and carriage company, Cobb & Co, made its last run.
The company ran from the 1850’s until they were replaced by motor vehicles.
Carriages were also frequently held up by bushrangers.
On this day in 1963, the Great Train Robbery occurred.
Ronnie Biggs and a group of men, stopped and held up a train going from Glasgow to London at 3 in the morning, and ended up making off with 10 million Pounds.
After being arrested and sent to prison, Biggs escaped from prison in 1965 and was a fugitive for 35 years. He travelled to South America, reportedly spending a lot of time in Brazil, as well as travelling to Australia.
As the recent WIN tv show will tell you, his wife and children found him in Australia, and they lived here for a number of years.
In 2000, Biggs returned to England and turned himself into police – but the money that was stolen was never recovered, and his story has become one of the greatest robbery stories in history.
