August 8th

August 8th

On this day in 1974, American President Richard Nixon, resigned following the Watergate Scandal.

Everyone in the Western world, knows the story of Republican Party members robbing the Democratic National Committees headquarters in Washington, which may or may not have lead to Nixon winning office in a landslide election.

Nixon faced impeachment before the US Congress for his involvement in this event and his continual efforts to conceal it. On August 8th however, he resigned his office in order to put “the interests of America first”.
Gerald Ford became the next President, and one of his first acts in office was to pardon President Nixon.

Side note: ‘All The President’s Men’ is an excellent movie.
